The first cool morning in the holler

There is a morning every year, usually in early fall, when the air changes overnight. The fog settles into the low field and stays. The barns hold their color against all that grey. Boone makes his rounds a little slower.

We planned the founding retreats for this stretch of the calendar on purpose. Amherst County in late September and October is the version of this place we most want people to meet: cool mornings, warm afternoons, the mountain turning over.

The cabin up the hill catches it first. From the deck you can watch the fog break apart over the ridge line while the hollow below stays soft for another hour.
